How do you relieve tension in the top of your foot?

I was recently diagnosed with something called "extensor tendonitis", which is basically an inflammation of the muscles and tendons that control the lifting of the toes and ankle. It's incredibly stiff in the mornings, and tight-fitting shoes are pretty much a no-go for me anymore because of how inflamed my feet feel. So my question: how should I relieve tension and ease inflammation and pain in the top of my feet?
