Can peripheral neuropathy be caused by hypothyroidism?

Asked 2 years ago

Hello, I have been experiencing numbness and tingling in my hands and feet lately, along with some weakness in my muscles. I have also recently been diagnosed with hypothyroidism. I am wondering if there is a connection between the two and if hypothyroidism can cause peripheral neuropathy. I appreciate any insights or advice anyone has on this.

Hypothyroidism can lead to peripheral neuropathy even early in the disease progression. While the relationship between the two conditions is unclear, hypothyroidism causes fluid retention in the body. This can cause swollen tissues that compress on the nerves and lead to peripheral neuropathy.
