When is an ankle injury serious, and how do I tell?
Asked 4 years ago
I rolled my ankle while running the other day, and it has been swelling up quite a lot. When should I be concerned?

There is excruciating discomfort, particularly when bearing weight on the affected foot, and pain when touching the ankle. Excessive, soft swelling, bruises, limited range of motion, ankle instability, and a popping feeling or sounds at the time of injury.
The most serious ankle injuries are fractures and grade 3 sprains. More than 75% of the ligament fibers are damaged in such situations. Severe pain and soreness are common complaints. There is full ankle instability, as well as considerable swelling and ecchymosis. You are unable to put any weight on your ankle, and your range of motion is severely limited.
