Sesamoiditis is pain and inflammation experienced in the tendon that runs over the sesamoid bones of the forefoot, usually caused by overuse or strain. The sesamoid bones provide leverage to the tendon controlling the big toe, originating from a muscle at the heel of the foot. The big toe is essential to maintaining alignment of the foot and lower leg throughout the gait cycle, leading this structure to become susceptible to becoming aggravated. Due to the location of the sesamoid bones, they are prone to developing inflammation and irritation upon repetitive striking with the ground.

Symptoms of sesamoiditis worsen with an increase in activity and usually start as a mild ache and progress from there into a potentially intense throbbing pain. In severe cases, some people have a reduced ability to bear weight on a foot that is flared up. Pain and swelling can indicate a fracture of the sesamoid bones.

Can Orthotics Help Sesamoiditis?

Sesamoiditis orthotics can help manage the symptoms experienced from the condition in your shoes you wear daily. Orthotics redistribute the load through the forefoot and away from the big toe, lessening the impact applied to the sesamoid bones during repetitive activities. Other conditions that could contribute to sesamoiditis can be managed by using orthotics, such as flat feet, metatarsalgia, reduced fat pads, or bunions.

Which Orthotic Insoles Should You Get for Sesamoiditis?

Shock-absorbing materials such as gel and foam are used to provide cushioning and support to the sesamoid bones and foot when striking the ground. The orthotics can be removed and washed, while being able to be used interchangeably between your different shoes at your convenience.

The design of the insoles should redistribute the weight towards the outside and lesser toes of the foot, with increased metatarsal support for the structures in your forefoot. This will lessen the direct impact applied to the sesamoid bones of the foot, lessening the reemergence of symptoms. Orthotics designed to accommodate the inflamed structure will in turn reduce a flare up of pain.

In minor cases of sesamoiditis, over-the-counter insoles may improve your pain and symptoms, but may not last as long as custom orthotics. In more severe cases of sesamoiditis, custom insoles specific to your feet may be needed to manage your case effectively. Custom orthotics will help prevent the need for surgical intervention in the future, due to pain associated with chronic sesamoiditis.
