Could my blood pressure medication cause neuropathy?

Asked 2 years ago

Hello, I have recently been experiencing tingling and numbness in my feet and hands, and my doctor has diagnosed me with peripheral neuropathy. However, I am concerned that my new blood pressure medication may be causing this condition. Could my blood pressure medication be the culprit behind my neuropathy, or is this just a coincidence? I would appreciate any insights anyone has with this issue. Thank you.

Certain blood pressure medications like Hydralazine and Amiodarone can cause drug-induced neuropathy. Usually, these drugs cause nerve damage that can be reversed if you stop the medication. Consider speaking to your doctor about this possibility and seeing what happens if you use a different medication for your high blood pressure.

Thanks for sharing! dealing with tingling and numbness can be unsettling, and it's good that you're being proactive. While peripheral neuropathy has many possible causes, certain blood pressure medications have been linked to nerve symptoms in some people, though it’s relatively rare.

Medications like beta-blockers or some ACE inhibitors have occasionally been associated with neuropathy-like symptoms, but more often, neuropathy stems from other causes like diabetes, vitamin deficiencies (especially B12), alcohol use, or autoimmune issues. Sometimes, it’s a combination of factors rather than just one clear cause.

The best move is to talk to your doctor about your concerns—they can review your medication and possibly run tests to rule out other causes or adjust your treatment plan.

In the meantime, if the nerve symptoms are affecting your feet, custom orthotics can help by improving foot support and reducing pressure on sensitive nerves. You can take our short quiz to find out what kind of support your feet really need.
