Do I need separate orthotic insoles for different shoes?
Asked 4 years ago
I have been diagnosed with a torn plantar plate in my right foot. The pain is minimal when I wear work shoes that have a very slight heel and decent arch support. However, the podiatrist also suggested I invest in custom orthotics. Can I use a single pair of orthotics for my dress shoes and sneakers, or will I need more than one pair?

Yes, you will need separate orthotics for dress shoes and sneakers. Custom insoles are designed for a specific type of shoe, at your request. However, you can interchange insoles between similar shoes. Upstep offers a discount for two pairs, so you could get one pair for flats, sneakers and running shoes, and another pair for dress shoes.

While your work shoe provides minimal pain relief, using a custom orthotic will do more. For effectiveness, you will need multiple orthotics since different types of shoes require varying orthotics. What works for dress shoes will not work for work shoes, so your orthotics provider will help you make variations in the design.
