What does a steroid injection actually do to your foot?

I've seen that people can get cortisone shots to help with issues in their feet, but what does it actually do? Is it just a form of painkiller, or does it actually help solve any issues?

A steroid injection is useful in reducing any pain, swelling, and even stiffness around your foot and ankle. It acts in place of your natural body hormones to combat inflammation. It can be administered as an adjunct to physical therapy and any other treatment you're receiving for the pain.
