What happens if you don't treat your shin splints?

If you don't get your shin splints treated, will they go away on their own, or do you run the risk of causing more damage?

Shin splints are a prevalent form of overuse injury. Most people recover from shin splints with rest and ice, with no long-term health consequences. However, if left untreated or if you continue to run or play sports without allowing your legs to recover, shin splints can progress to a tibial stress fracture. When little cracks form in the bone, this is referred to as a stress fracture. Doctors frequently prescribe using crutches or wearing a walking boot to treat a stress fracture while the bones recover.
