Does coconut help relieve nerve pain?

Asked 3 years ago

Hello, I'm desperately looking for something to relieve this burning sensation in my feet. However, I don't generally take medication. I know that coconut generally helps with topical burns. Will it help with neuropathic burning?

Coconut oil does infact help with reducing pain in the body when applied topically to the area of pain. However, coconut oil may not be effective in treating nerve pain. Essential oils such as lavender, eucalyptus, tea tree and peppermint can be used to treat symptoms related to burning feet.

Gentle cold water foot soaking before bed may aid you in sleeping better at night by reducing the pain you may experience. Reduce the amount of heat your feet may be exposed to. Be conscious that you may not feel your skin burning in hot water or close to a heat source due to the nerve damage present in your feet. Likewise, be careful not to do the same with ice. Orthotics may give you symptom relief by reducing areas of higher pressure applied to the sole of the foot by distributing the weight evenly. Elevating the feet at the end of the day may also provide symptom relief for your burning feet.

There is no evidence supporting the effectiveness of coconut in relieving nerve pain. If you want to avoid medications, there are other non-pharmacologic approaches to treat neuropathic burning. Some of them are soaking your feet in cold water, elevating the legs, and taking nutritional supplements. Custom orthotics can also minimize burning feet by redistributing pressure away from the affected nerve.
