Why do my shin splints keep returning even after I rest?
Asked 4 years ago
Should I be concerned that I've sustained a permanent injury? How long should I be resting to prevent shin splints from returning?

Anticipate to rest from your sport or exercise for at least 2 to 4 weeks. For 1 to 2 weeks, minimize repetitious lower leg exercise. Limit your physical activity to the walking you undertake on a daily basis.
As long as you're not in discomfort, try other low-impact activity like swimming, ellipticals, or riding. If the pain has gone away after 2 to 4 weeks, you can resume your normal activities. Gradually increase your activity level. If the pain reappears, immediately cease exercising.
It's important to understand that shin splints might take 3 to 6 months to recover. Do not return to your sport or exercise too quickly. You might damage yourself once more.
