Can I have Gout in my heel bone, and if so, how do I tell the difference between a gout flare, Plantar Fasciitis, or Heel Bursitis?

Asked 2 months ago

I usually hear about gout in the big toe, but the back or bottom of my heel is suddenly red, severely swollen, and painfully hot to the touch. The pain is so intense I can't bear any weight. Is this really gout, and why is it considered one of the worst types of foot pain?

Yes, gout can affect your heel, even though it’s more common in the big toe. A gout flare in the heel usually causes sudden, intense pain that’s hot, swollen, and red, making it very hard to put any weight on it. This is very different from plantar fasciitis, which causes sharp pain mainly when you take your first steps in the morning, or heel bursitis, which tends to cause more constant soreness and swelling. Gout pain is often described as one of the worst because it comes on quickly and is extremely painful. If you suspect gout, it’s important to see a doctor for proper diagnosis and treatment since it requires specific medication and management. While you’re recovering, using ice, elevating your foot, and resting will help. For general foot support and comfort during healing, custom orthotics from Upstep can help relieve pressure once the acute pain eases, and they deliver straight to your door without needing a specialist visit.
