Because the muscles commonly associated with shin splints are deep muscles of the lower leg, remedial massage, myotherapy, or deep tissue massage is preferred over foam rolling or static stretching because therapists can isolate and reach the deeper muscles more effectively. Sports massage can be quite beneficial in the treatment of shin splints by increasing the flexibility of the muscles in the lower leg. However, it is critical that the therapist avoids the uncomfortable inflamed areas along the tibia (shin bone).
