Which is better for plantar fasciitis: hot or cold?
Asked 4 years ago
I want to alleviate some of the pain and inflammation of plantar fasciitis because it's so bad I can't walk. Should I ice my foot or soak it in hot water? How do you handle it? I wish that this ailment would heal quickly because it's a pain, literally.

Ice is better for plantar fasciitis, especially in acute stages. Ice can help reduce inflammation and heel pain. Contrast baths, which alternate hot and cold water, can also be helpful. Heat alone may make symptoms worse for some people, so always end a contrast bath with a soak in cold water. Get well soon

Because plantar fasciitis presents with acute inflammation, icing your foot is easily the best way to manage the pain, especially when compared to heat therapy. To promote faster healing, use ice with rest, NSAIDs, massage, and orthotics. Together, these approaches will relieve your pain and ensure optimal recovery.

Because of the inflammation associated with the acute phase of plantar fasciitis, soaking your feet in hot water is discouraged. Heat can increase swelling and worsen the condition. Thus, icing the foot presents a better option than heating. Alongside ice, you may also get a custom orthotic to cushion the foot and relieve pain.

In your case, I'd recommend starting with cold therapy, like ice packs or ice massage, for acute pain and inflammation to reduce swelling and provide temporary relief. In contrast, heat therapy, such as soaking in warm water or using a heating pad, is more suitable for chronic pain and stiffness, improving blood circulation and relaxing muscles. Both can be beneficial but serve different purposes in managing plantar fasciitis symptoms.
Also, consider using custom orthotics, as they help to alleviate strain on the affected area and contribute to the overall management and relief of the condition.

Totally hear you—plantar fasciitis can be brutal, especially when it flares up that badly. When the pain is intense and you're dealing with inflammation, ice is usually the better choice over heat. Rolling your foot over a frozen water bottle for 10–15 minutes a few times a day can help reduce swelling and numb the pain.
Once the sharp inflammation calms down, warm soaks or gentle stretches can be helpful to loosen the tissue. Long-term, wearing supportive shoes and using custom orthotics can make a huge difference by taking pressure off your heel and giving your arch proper support.
One effective solution is using custom orthotics. Upstep Plantar Fasciitis Custom Orthotics are designed to provide targeted support and cushioning to alleviate strain on the plantar fascia. These orthotics are crafted based on your unique foot impressions, addressing your specific needs.
