Why does the back of my heel hurt so much when I touch it?
Asked a month ago
I have a really sharp, tender pain right at the back of my heel, slightly above the bottom part. It is especially painful when I wear dress shoes or hiking boots that rub on it, or if I press on the spot. Is this the Achilles tendon, or could it be a bony problem that needs specialized treatment?

That sharp pain at the back of your heel is often caused by Haglund’s deformity, sometimes called a “pump bump.” It happens when a small bony growth forms on the heel bone and gets irritated by shoes pressing against it. This can also affect the Achilles tendon and the small fluid sac in that area, making it sore to touch. The best way to ease the pain is to reduce pressure. Wear shoes with a softer or open back and use custom orthotics with a small heel lift to take tension off the tendon. Upstep can design orthotics that do exactly that, and they deliver them straight to your door, so you don’t need to wait for an appointment to see a specialist.
