Can you fix chronic ankle instability with custom insoles?
Asked 2 years ago
I have sprained my ankles a bunch in my life and never thought that it could be due to an underlying condition. I think I might have chronic ankle instability, but I'm not sure if this is due to spraining my ankles so many times, or if it's the reason I've messed up my ankle joints so badly. I want to start fixing the problem, or at least alleviating the symptoms, and want to know if custom insoles or orthotics can help stabilize my ankles in a permanent way.

It is important to know the cause of your recurrent ankle sprains. While there may be a chance of you having ankle instability, there may also be other potential reasons for your ankle pains.
Getting a custom made orthotic will surely help in your condition as it will provide you with extra support, due to the added cushioning and will help in adjusting to your foot mechanics by improving it and preventing any future ankle sprains.
However, I would suggest you to also get yourself examined, assessed and diagnosed for your recurrent ankle sprains by a Physical therapist and also starting a good ankle and foot strengthening exercise program. This way you will know the exact cause of your ankle sprains, you will be aware the precautions you need to take to prevent future ankle sprains and will know your foot biomechanics which may have been altered.
