Why does my ankle still hurt several months after a sprain?

Asked 2 years ago

I picked up an injury while running a few months back that had me off my feet with severe ankle pain for a few days. I was told that I should limit walking until it's already healed and do everything I can to avoid excess ankle pain by whatever means. Well, it's been a few months since then and I still have ankle pain when walking, and I don't even think about running because the injury is still really painful. Is this normal? Should I seek additional treatment or physical rehab for my foot or just wait it out?

Severe ankle sprains can weaken and destabilize the ankle joint complex in comparison to the other. Did you see a health professionalĀ about it or do any ankle exercises at the time? šŸ¤— I had an online consultation with a doctor and was given naproxen to treat the inflammation.Ā In that situation, I'd suggest getting it checked out to see what's causing the swelling and pain around the ankle. Of course, I'd recommend a podiatrist, but a competent sports physiotherapist will also be knowledgeable with ankles. They will be able to establish the likely source of swelling based on the examination. I'll see what I can do about finding a link to some ankle-strengthening exercises or custom orthotics
