Are Custom Orthotics effective for Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome?

Asked 2 years ago

My first visit to physio today after suffering on and off from shin splints for the last 18 months as a runner. Been running for around 12 years. Diagnosed as Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome. Lots of scar tissue but no fractures luckily. Recommended custom orthotics for low arches. Exercise plan and intensive massage twice a week along shins to break down scar tissue. Together with 10 days of ibuprofen and no running at present. Anyone else had custom orthotics or been in a similar situation?

Orthotics could help symptoms of MTSS by causing your legs to work in alignment, and reducing stress on the ankle stabilizing muscles. Orthotics can cushion the impact of walking on hard surfaces and reduce stress on shin splints. Orthotics provide a stable base with support for lower leg muscles.
